Chicago Tragedy, Loyola Student Fatally Shot Near Campus as Police Question Person of Interest
In Chicago, authorities are continuing their investigation into a heartbreaking act of violence that claimed the life of a young college student near campus. Police confirmed they are questioning a person of interest following Thursday’s deadly shooting of Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old student at Loyola University Chicago.
According to investigators, Gorman was walking with friends at Tobey Prinz Beach, located less than a mile from campus, around 1 a.m. when a male suspect approached the group on foot. Without warning, the suspect allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire. Gorman was struck in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. No other individuals were injured during the incident.
Police stated that Gorman was not believed to be the intended target, raising further concern about random acts of violence in the area. The suspect fled the scene, and authorities have yet to release additional identifying details.
Originally from New York, Gorman was nearing the completion of her first year in college. Her family has since spoken out, describing the incident as “murder” and remembering her as “the light of our lives,” someone who made others feel safe, seen, and loved.
In the wake of the tragedy, classmates gathered for a private vigil, honoring her memory with shared stories and reflection. Meanwhile, students are calling for stronger safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The investigation remains ongoing.
