Mystery Surrounds Teen’s Death, Authorities Seek Answers in Case of McKenna Wendel
Authorities in South Dakota are continuing their investigation into the death of 14-year-old McKenna Wendel, whose body was discovered days after she was reported missing from her grandparents’ home in Sioux Falls. As of now, no arrests have been made, and officials say many critical details remain unknown.
According to Sioux Falls Police Department Lt. Terrance Matia, investigators are still awaiting the results of a full autopsy. Speaking during a press conference, Matia emphasized that authorities have not yet determined the cause or manner of death. “I have no suspect of any crime yet,” he stated, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the case.
Wendel was last seen around 1:30 a.m. on March 14 and was officially reported missing the following morning. Her body was later found on March 19 in rural Brookings County, located about an hour north of her home. Investigators revealed that evidence suggests she may have traveled across multiple states, including Iowa and Minnesota, prior to her death.
Authorities are working closely with the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and federal prosecutors to determine where any future charges could be filed if evidence of a crime emerges. Police Chief Jon Thum described the case as deeply impactful, calling it a tragedy that will stay with investigators throughout their careers.
Remembered for her gentle spirit and humor, McKenna’s loss has left a profound void among family and loved ones.
