Authorities are actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning in Bethel, according to officials from the Alaska Bureau of Investigation. The incident took place at approximately 4:00 a.m. and has since prompted a detailed review by state investigators.

Preliminary reports indicate that the situation began earlier in the night when a man was taken to a local hospital after reportedly standing in the roadway under concerning circumstances. After being released, the individual later returned to the street, where law enforcement officers again encountered him. Officials stated that the man refused to comply with officers’ commands during this second interaction.

According to investigators, the situation escalated when the man allegedly produced a knife and began approaching one of the officers. In response to the perceived threat, the officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, and the man was transported by medical evacuation to a hospital in the Anchorage area, where he is currently being treated for serious injuries.

Authorities confirmed that no officers or other individuals were injured during the incident. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation’s Western Alaska Major Crimes Unit has taken over the case to ensure a thorough and impartial review of the events.

Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be forwarded to the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions for an independent assessment. Officials have not yet released the identity of the individual involved as the investigation remains ongoing.
