Smith Edward Gilley, a respected attorney, public servant, and lifelong East Texan, passed away on March 20, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on September 8, 1939, in Miller Grove, Texas, to Edith Faye (Smith) and Edward Lee Gilley, Smith lived a life defined by dedication to his community, his profession, and the values he held dear.

Raised on his family’s farm and helping at the Miller Grove General Store, Smith developed a deep appreciation for hard work and small-town life early on. He went on to graduate from Miller Grove High School, East Texas State University, and Baylor Law School, laying the foundation for a remarkable legal and political career. In 1963, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marines, where he spent six years in active duty and the reserves.

Smith made Greenville his home for most of his life, practicing law there for over six decades after receiving his license in 1964. Beyond the courtroom, he played a vital role in public service, representing Hunt County and surrounding areas in the Texas State Legislature from 1975 to 1987. Known for his unwavering support of small businesses, he was honored in 1982 at the White House by President Ronald Reagan as Small Business Advocate of the Year.

Whether in a suit or his beloved sweatshirt declaring “Smith – The Man. The Myth. The Legend,” he left a lasting impression. His belief in kindness and helping others defined his legacy, one that will endure for generations.
