Grandfather Charged After Shooting Grandson, Claims He Mistook Target for Aggressive Dog During Heated Argument
A 79-year-old South Carolina man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he shot his own grandson during a domestic dispute, later claiming he had been aiming at an aggressive dog. The incident, which occurred on March 18, 2026, in Richland County, has raised questions about conflicting accounts and the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Deputies responded to reports of gunfire at a residence and arrived to find a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the hip. The injured man, identified as the suspect’s grandson, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery. Officials confirmed that he has since been released and is recovering.
Investigators allege that the suspect, Larry Brown, attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended nearby. Authorities say the shooting happened during an argument between Brown and his grandson, though the exact sequence of events remains unclear. Brown has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
During a subsequent bond hearing, Brown’s defense attorney argued that the case is complicated and lacks clear evidence, describing it as a “he said, she said” situation. The defense claims Brown may have been trying to shoot a dog on the property that had become aggressive, but accidentally struck his grandson instead.
Additional information revealed that Brown had been allowing his grandson to live with him after his release from prison. The defense also pointed to Brown’s declining mental and physical health following a previous car crash, suggesting he may require evaluation.
A judge granted bond under strict conditions as the investigation continues.
