Downtown Fresno Shooting, Police Identify Victim as Meharie Kidane After Party Turns Deadly

A tragic shooting in Fresno has left the community shaken after authorities identified the victim as Meharie Kidane, 38. The incident occurred late Friday night, March 20, near the intersection of Fulton and Inyo streets, just hours before the city’s annual FresYes Fest was set to begin.

According to Mindy Casto, the shooting followed a large gathering nearby that drew approximately 300 attendees. What began as a party quickly escalated when a fight broke out, prompting security personnel to disperse the crowd. As people spilled out into the surrounding streets, gunfire suddenly erupted, turning a chaotic situation into a deadly one.

Kidane was struck during the shooting and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Despite the presence of increased police patrols in anticipation of FresYes Fest, the violence unfolded in a matter of moments, highlighting the unpredictability of such incidents.

Chief Casto noted that the area had additional officers on duty and emphasized that downtown Fresno remains generally safe, even as isolated acts of violence continue to occur. She reflected on the incident personally, mentioning that her own daughter had been in the area that evening, underscoring how deeply such tragedies can affect the community.

As of now, Fresno police have not identified the suspect and are actively searching for the shooter. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to bring justice and clarity to the case.
