A Balcony Breach Turns Deadly, Ex-Boyfriend Sentenced After Firing 19 Shots in Fatal Domestic Violence Attack.
A tragic case of domestic violence in Glendale has ended with a life sentence, nearly three years after a brutal shooting claimed the life of 20-year-old Jordin Castillo. The incident, which occurred in June 2023 near 51st and Northern avenues, shocked the community and highlighted the devastating consequences of escalating abuse.
According to investigators, 24-year-old Rueben Rocha, Castillo’s ex-boyfriend, climbed onto her third-floor apartment balcony and forced his way inside. Once inside, he opened fire, discharging 19 rounds while Castillo was on the phone with emergency services. She suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital, where she later died. Two other individuals inside the apartment were also shot and seriously injured but survived.
At the time of the attack, Castillo’s young daughter was present in the apartment. Fortunately, others inside the residence were able to move the child to safety before she was harmed. Court records later revealed that Castillo had previously secured an order of protection against Rocha following the end of their relationship—an order that ultimately failed to prevent the violence.
On March 20, 2026, Rocha was sentenced to natural life in prison, along with an additional 52.5 years. He was convicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, burglary, aggravated assault, and interfering with judicial proceedings.
Family members continue to speak out, urging greater awareness about domestic violence and the limitations of protective measures in preventing tragedy.
